ISHIDA DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS
RARA AVIS
JANUARY 23, 2026 | 8:00 P.M. | DELL HALL AT THE LONG CENTER
Nationally acclaimed ISHIDA Dance Company is back.
Pulitzer prize-winning dance critic Sarah L Kaufman described ISHIDA’s work as “deeply poignant” and “remarkable”.
“The dancers weaved pure magic in the air, and you could almost hear jaws dropping as they moved…” wrote Brett Cullum, Broadway World.
Rara avis which means “rare bird” in Latin is a highly physical, visually stunning and emotionally resonant international program with critically acclaimed dancers and choreography. The world premiere of Rara avis by ISHIDA follows a singer who struggles with imposter syndrome as she returns to stage after taking a hiatus.
The program includes Mutual Comfort by world renowned Romanian choreographer Edward Clug and a new dance theater work by award-winning British Finnish choreographer Kristian Lever. The evening promises to be a unique opportunity to see some of the best and most interesting choreography from Europe and the U.S.
VIP tickets include access to the VIP post performance reception on the Mezzanine level for a toast to meet the dancers and Artistic Director.

Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?—a painting by Paul Gauguin in 1897, depicts disparate states of being.
Like Gaugin’s painting, Ishida Dance Company prompts existential questions through dreamscapes that celebrate universal themes of our psyche—betrayal, belonging, loss and love.
Ishida Dance Company presents world-class contemporary dance performances consisting of new works by choreographers that are innovative and unique experimenting with dance and contemporary narratives in dance theatre to support accessibility for audiences to gather meaning in performances. Such programming extends an invitation towards introspection and embracing Otherness.
