Program Notes:

Golden Hornet teams up with Onix, Mexico City's premiere chamber ensemble, for a thrilling album and concert of horror, featuring new works by Jimena Contreras, Felipe Pérez Santiago, and Graham Reynolds. 

This program includes two new commissions,concerts in Mexico and Texas, and an album release, all on the theme of Horror Stories. Horror De Cámara is the newest commission in Golden Hornet’s MXTX: Cross-Border Series. This ongoing series of Texas-Mexico based commissions has aims of using music to overcome divides, as the two communities become one in making an artistic statement together. For this project, our shared interest in stories of the morbid, the supernatural, and the unknown come together to reveal how much our cultures have in common beneath surface differences.

Video game and film composer Jimena Contreras created a suite inspired by Mexican folk monsters, while Graham Reynolds adapted and developed his score for Ballet Austin’s “Poe”, inspired by the life and work of Edgar Alan Poe. By placing these two musical traditions side by side, Horror De Cámara reveals how storytellers on both sides of the border have always been in conversation.

Tonight’s program also features two pieces by Felipe Pérez Santiago.“Post-War” constitutes the second movement of the work Battlefeels, originally composed for a choreography of the same name. The piece reflects the horror of war and the devastating process of aftermath and reconstruction. In contrast, “The Mexas Ensemble Massacre”, is a tribute to the musical scores of 1980s horror films like The Fog, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and The Thing, highlighting the very peculiar use of synthesizers that gave them that era-specific sound.

KMFA’s Offbeat Concert Series: 

KMFA’s Offbeat Concert Series highlights active artists living and creating in Central Texas’s new and indie classical scene (with some friends from outside the state)! This concert series embodies the aesthetic of the Central Texas arts scene - casual, fun, maximalist, and colorful. Audience members can expect an immersive experience with emphasis on new music programming from the 20th and 21st century.
