Presenter Details

  • Name: Joe McDermott
  • Joe McDermott was declared a “Texas Treasure” by the Texas Library Association and was the 2006 Grand Prize Winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Joe’s crazy songs have been entertaining children for 37 years. Even Stan Berenstain, creator of the Berenstain Bear, says: “Joe is an absolute wizard at communicating with children through music.” Joe began performing at the age of five, learned guitar, got his fine arts degree from the University of Texas-Austin, played in rock bands, and started a preschool in Austin. It was this immersion in early childhood education that led to his career as one of the nation’s top children’s recording artists. His recordings have won numerous awards from national parents’ organizations, NAPPA, and the International Song Writing Contest. He has performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and has arranged his songs for orchestral performance. His collaboration with Stan Berenstain has produced musical adaptations of Berenstain’s children’s books.
