Mike and Theresa Harkins are avid cyclists, theatergoers, and travelers, having joined KMFA for trips to Vail, Italy, Santa Fe, and Paris coming up in 2020! Both retired in 2014 after long tech careers. In their spare time, Theresa is a skilled weaver and spinner, serving as Treasurer of the Weavers and Spinners Society of Austin, and Mike is an audio enthusiast and member of the Austin Astronomical Society and the American Society for Quality local section.
How long have you been KMFA members?
We have been KMFA members for more than 40 years.
What is your favorite program to listen to on KMFA?
We enjoy everything coming from KMFA, so it’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite. But Midday Oasis with Dianne Donovan is usually playing after the morning bike ride or trip to the gym. We also enjoy listening to and puzzling over the Piano Puzzler on Performance Today.
What is one of your all-time favorite pieces of music, composers, or performers, and why?
One of our favorites is Antonin Dvorak’s New World Symphony. This symphony, his ninth, demonstrates his unique ability to take folk music from America and turn it into a masterwork of memorable melodies. That’s why it is so special.
Why do you choose to support KMFA?
We think that KMFA is more than a radio station. We believe that KMFA has the potential to be a hub of cultural influence for the Austin Community, and the station’s new home in 2020 will certainly enable that capability far into the future.
