About
This January, Beerthoven will raise a glass to music of Jewish descent, from the celebratory sounds of klezmer, to the meditative music of Yom Kippur, to memorializing songs of the Holocaust. We'll be joined by Pianist Xin Chang, Baritone David Small (Professor of Voice of the University of Texas), as well as Cellist Seth Russel and Clarinetist Luz Sarmiento.
Beerthoven is revisiting its roots in its partnership with the Austin Saengerrunde, whose mission is to celebrate German heritage through song. The Jewish people had an undeniable impact on German music, especially through the contributions of composer Gustav Mahler, whose Kindertotenlieder will be featured on this program. The performances will also feature songs written by Jews who were detained in the Theresienstadt concentration camp such as Ilse Weber, Adolf Strauss, and Viktor Ullmann. A more contemporary look at the Holocaust will take place through Yiddish song settings by living composer Judith Shatin. Other Jewish works will also be featured, including Ernest Bloch's setting of Kol Nidre.
Beerthoven is proud to feature Rabbi Neil Blumofe of congregation Agudas Achim, who will recite poetry to the music of Viktor Ullmann.
Beerthoven events include free beer, wine, and other refreshments and are family-friendly. Students discount tickets are available at the door for $10 each.
This program is made possible in part by a Core Funding Grant from the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin.
