About

The Wednesday Morning Music Club (“WMMC”) presents a program entitled “Musical Mélange” on Wednesday, March 21st, at 10 a.m. The program is WMMC’s annual tribute to a variety of musical styles and instruments. This performance takes place at the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs Building on San Gabriel. The public is invited and welcomed.

First on the program is WMMC member and flautist, Sheryl Goodnight accompanied by her special guest, pianist Stephen Burnaman, who perform Walter Wilhelm Gieseking’s Sonatine, the Vivace. Gieseking, born in Lyon, France, was a German pianist acclaimed for his command of works by Classical, Romantic, and early 20th-century composers. Known as an interpreter of Debussy, Ravel, Scarlatti, Mozart, and Beethoven, he was an acknowledged master of pedal technique. His own compositions include a set of variations and the sonata for flute and piano.

WMMC president and pianist, Janie Keys, performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata in E minor. The enchanting and enigmatic E minor is rarely heard and, perhaps, the least famous in J.S. Bach’s toccata. It represents the renaissance period when the divide between capitalism and feudalism fostered music in more stylized or ‘fashionable’ modes. Here the sense of toccata music is free - filled with enthusiasm, emotion, and fantasy.

WMMC members Carla Johnson, soprano, and Katie Kerwin, guitar, perform Three Songs for Soprano and Guitar: “When From My Love” by John Bartlet and George Frideric Handel’s “Art Thou Troubled” and his “Where’er You Walk”.

Tarantelle for Flute, Oboe, and Piano, composed by Philippe Gaubert and Deux Interludes - Movement II by Jacques Ibert are presented by WMMC members Pat Yingst, flute, and Maxine Gomes on piano. WMMC guest performer, Andy Ross, accompanies them on oboe.

Felicity Coltman, Marcia Edwards, and Kathryn Govier, all WMMC members, present a piano trio and perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Valse and Romance.

Rounding out the program, WMMC members, and fiddlers extraordinaire, Ruby Jane Smith and Gregory Shields, set toes tapping and hearts thumping with April Verch’s Fork Creek River: Fiddle Tune. Verch, a native of the Ottawa Valley, Canada, never forgets the roots of her music – the connection to people in the audience, on the dance floor, and to the community - all sparked by a good song. In her words: “It’s about joining together to celebrate everyday life, through music.”

What better way to herald in the beginning of SPRING?
