It’s summer music festival season in Texas and that means two things. The Lone Star State is flooded with a couple hundred of the nation’s most gifted university level pre-professional classical musicians. Classical music lovers in Austin have two options for weekend classical music excursions.

If you prefer a weekend in the country, The Round Top Music Festival is in the midst of its 46th season and they offer both chamber and orchestral concerts in Texas’s smallest incorporated village through July 15th.

If you are into a more urban, cosmopolitan experience for your weekend getaway, the 27th Annual Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival (TMF) is underway at the University of Houston. They offer an eclectic schedule of concerts throughout the month of June which are anchored by a series of orchestral programs on Saturday nights.

This week the Houston Symphony’s former music director Hans Graf will make his TMF debut in a program of musical firsts by Alban Berg, Anton Webern, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. KMFA’s Music Director Chris Johnson called him at his home in Salzburg to talk about the program and his much-anticipated debut with the TMF Orchestra.
