The Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is a multifaceted group of four uniquely accomplished musicians. Their programs range from Bluegrass to Bach, and they consistently play to sold-out houses world-wide. LAGQ is one of the many groups that will be performing at Bass Concert Hall on Saturday night for the world premiere of Nico Muhly's brand new work, How Little You Are.
Bill Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet joined Dianne Donovan in the studio this morning to talk about the premiere and working with Nico Muhly, "Working with Nico, he's just fantastic. He wasjust hearing the piece for the first time, and some of his comments were so poetic. They were exactly what you wouldn't expect a composer to say.."
He also spoke at length about the powerful arrangement of voices and guitar in How Little You Are, as the piece explores the hope, fear, and loneliness of Texas’ original settlers as they moved westward to the promise of a better life. "There is precedent, of course, of guitars working with choruses, but nothing with this kind of grandeur. A number of people last night after rehearsal were discussing it, and there's something so natural about voice and guitar together."
The world premiere will take place Saturday, April 18 at Bass Concert Hall, presented by Texas Performing Arts, Conspirare, and Austin Classical Guitar. You can also hear the performance in a live broadcast right here on KMFA 89.5 Saturday night at 8 p.m.
