Grammy-nominated violinist Jennifer Koh stays busy. She is a both a prolific recording artist and performer who’s known for doing what you could say are pretty “serious” projects. She regularly commissions composers to write new music for her. She’s performed all of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin on the same program. She’s recorded rarely-performed fantasies for violin by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Arnold Schoenberg--which is why it’s so interesting that her latest recording features music by none other than Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a composer who is sometimes maligned for his lack of compositional prowess, or for only being able to write "pretty melodies." Jennifer Koh and I sat down for a conversation recently where we talked about her coming out as a lover of Tchaikovsky's music and her new recording of his complete works for violin and orchestra which is available from Chicago-based Cedille Records.
