IN TRIBUTE TO WOMEN COMPOSERS:
A FACULTY RECITAL BY HAI ZHENG AND FRIENDS
FEBRUARY 8 | 7:30 P.M. | ALMA THOMAS FINE ARTS CENTER
The Sarofim School of Fine Arts’ Music Department is proud to present a faculty recital featuring Hai Zheng and friends.
Hai Zheng’s Faculty Recital: A Celebration of Women Composers, an inspiring evening dedicated to the extraordinary contributions of women in classical music.
SU faculty cellist Hai Zheng will be joined by Dr. Kiyoshi Tamagawa on piano and Dr. Bruce Cain as baritone, presenting an exquisite selection of works that span over two centuries.
Program Overview
The program will open with Florence Beatrice Price’s touching “Adoration,” an elegant work that exemplifies Price’s legacy as a trailblazing African American composer. Chen Yi’s “Romance of Hsiao and Ch’in” follows, bringing ancient Chinese musical narratives to life, paired with Amy Beach’s “Five Pieces,” which captures both the passion and delicacy of Beach’s late Romantic style.
After a brief intermission, audiences will experience the power and sensitivity of works by contemporary composers Jessie Montgomery and Jennifer Higdon, both known for their innovative voices in today’s classical scene. Margaret Bonds’ soulful “Walk with Me” reflects her deep ties to African American music and spirituals, while Nadia Boulanger’s “Trois Pièces” offers a glimpse into the nuanced, introspective world of this influential teacher and composer.
The recital concludes with the graceful “Sicilienne” by Maria Theresia von Paradis and Édith Piaf’s haunting “Hymne à L’amour,” bringing together the European classical tradition with timeless French chanson in a heartfelt finale.
This recital is a celebration not only of women composers but of the resilience, diversity, and brilliance they bring to the world of classical music. It offers a rare chance to hear both familiar and lesser-known works, illuminating the legacy of women’s voices across the ages.
Be part of this unforgettable evening as we honor the power of music to transcend boundaries and uplift voices. This event is free and open to the public—mark your calendar and join us for a night of beautiful music at Alma Thomas Theater!
