About

"Mapping Memory" is a short-term exhibition at the Blanton Museum of Art that showcases 19 rare maps dating from 16th-century New Spain (modern-day Mexico). The exquisitely detailed hand-painted maps, created by Indigenous artists, are part of the Relaciones Geográficas held by the Benson Latin American Collection at The University of Texas at Austin.

The exhibition displays the maps as art objects that illustrate the exchange of Spanish and Indigenous cultures, expanding perspectives on a period associated with the destruction of Indigenous culture. Timed with the 500-year anniversary of the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico, the maps provide an opportunity to see how the indigenous peoples were able to negotiate their status both socially and artistically.

The exhibition closes August 25, 2019.

Free on Thursdays.
