About

Under the commanding baton of John Caputo, the Austin Brass Band will present an evening of both well-known and rarely performed music. The band will open with Peter Graham’s explosive work Ad Optimum. Following this will be music by John Williams, Joseph Turrin, Leroy Anderson, William Rimmer and George Allan. The full potential of British brass band instruments will be explored, with stunningly balanced chorales, immaculate and meticulous marches and thrilling technical passages all performed with enthusiasm by the players of Austin Brass Band. The evening will close with Peter Graham’s Gaelforce, a tempestuous work featuring traditional Scottish and Irish folk songs.

The Austin Brass Band is the only traditional British-style brass band in the area. The group differs from American-style brass ensembles by using cornets, flugelhorns and tenor horns instead of trumpets and French horns. British brass bands also use baritones as well as euphoniums, along with trombones, both E-flat and double B-flat tubas and percussion. This unique instrumentation provides a distinctive sound that is rich, round and mellow. The band was originally formed in 2005 by members of the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble, inspired by the 1996 British movie Brassed Off!

Austin Brass Band presents over a dozen concerts every year, most recently at Texas Community Music Festival, where they performed to a packed audience. For more information on upcoming performances, please contact Sarah Brown (sarahbrown2811@gmail.com).
