What Goes Well with Classical Music?

Laurie Turner, Night Air host - Summer 2008
Laurie Turner

The word for my summer is "layering" (just like my favorite clothing style). Layers of friends, music, good food and fun are my ingredients for a perfect summer evening.with the solid but relaxing strains of KMFA's Night Air as a musical foundation. Once you've got the music, step by step the rest will just fall into place.

I'd pair Night Air melodies with a recipe that is good for gathering people together called Hoppin' Johns. It's a hearty meal I enjoy in the summer because of all the fresh produce available. There are many versions, but this recipe involves cooking a big pot of black-eyed peas to ladle over steaming cooked rice and then layering in lots of fresh vegetables to taste.until your heart's content.

It's a potpourri of flavors, textures and colors that blend together beautifully.(just like the music of Night Air.) Create your own unique "symphony" and enjoy!

Hoppin' Johns:
Cooked black-eyed peas (I like to season mine with lots of garlic and cumin)
Cooked long-grain brown rice
Rose's Timpone's salsa (locally made)
Romaine or red-leaf lettuce - shredded
Bell peppers (red, yellow and green)
Green onions - chopped
Tomatoes - chopped
Cilantro
Hot peppers - chopped (to taste)
Avocado - sliced
Cheese (sharp cheddar or goat cheese are good)
Plain yogurt or sour cream (dollop on top)
Serve with your favorite chilled white wine (white Bordeaux would get my vote) or cold imported beer (in glasses from the freezer).

For dessert:
Layer mango sorbet (Häagen-Dazs®) with fresh blueberries and top with a couple of Pepperidge Farm® orange Milano® cookies.

Top all this off with a long walk or a free late-night swim at Barton Springs.just be sure to take your transistor radio and KMFA's Night Air with you!
